Explanations and Photos
Age Spots / Brown Spots

Age spots are flat brown-black spots that usually occur in
sun-exposed areas on the body. Age spots have are not
related to the liver in any way, despite their name. Liver
spots, are changes in the skin color associated with older
skin. The increased pigmentation of age spots is brought
on by aging, exposure to sun or to other forms of
ultraviolet lights.
Age spot removal is a painless procedure. We use  the
Palomar Starlux tm,  treating the affected areas.
Depending on the individual, the spots usually get
gradually darker over the next few days, and start to
turn into very thin scabs.  They then just fall off to reveal
clear skin underneath.  Some people require more than
one treatment.
A free consultation at our office will evaluate your
particular situation, to determine your best course of
treatment.
Vascular Lesions

A vascular lesion is a skin
blemish,that appears due to
abnormal blood vessels located
directly beneath the surface of the
skin,  giving the skin a red color.
Types of vascular lesions include
port-wine stains, hemangiomas,
cherry angiomas, and spider veins.
Before the lasers surgery, there
was no acceptable treatment for
the various types of vascular
lesions.
A cherry angioma
is a benign skin growth that appears as a small,
smooth, cherry-red bump.  They are fairly
common, and vary in size.  They can occur
almost anywhere on the body .

Our laser can eliminate them, with no pain,
cutting, or scarring.
As a person ages they lose collagen throughout their skin and the
level of skin elasticity drops off dramatically.  In addition the size of
skin pores increases dramatically.  Enlarged pores can lead to an
increase in facial imperfections including blackheads, oily skin,
wrinkles, and older looking skin.
We treat pore enlargements with   Photorejuvenation, to stimulate
the growth of collagen and decrease the pore size.
two initial treatments usually do the job with optional maintenance
every 6 months.
PhotoRejuvenation is a cosmetic
treatment designed to produce
younger and healthier looking skin. As
we age, we begin to see visible signs
of sun damage, time, and lifestyle
choices appearing in our complexion.
(smoking, drinking, etc.) This aged look
may include freckles, Rosacea, wrinkles,
broken capillaries, dark spots, blotchy
skin color, redness of the face and
neck, enlarged pore size and uneven
pigmentation. Our Rejuvelux Process is
the only procedure that can treat
vascular redness, the appearance of
Rosacea, pigmented brown spots, sun
damage, skin texture, and collagen
structure all at once. With the use of
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL™)
technology, dramatic improvements
can now be accomplished with little or
no "downtime" and with very minimal
discomfort.
Normal skin contains cells called
melanocytes that produce the brown
skin-coloring pigment melanin.  There are
several conditions in which melanocytes
are either abnormal or abnormally
distributed.  A pale area of the skin is
the result of fewer or less active
melanocytes than usual, whereas a
darker area (or area that tans more
easily) indicates more numerous or more
active melanocytes.

Sometimes mistaken for a suntan,
bronzing of the skin often develops
starting at pressure points such as
elbows, knuckles, and knees and
spreading from there.  It is also seen in
the creases of the feet and the palms of
the hands.  The bronze color can range
from light to dark (in fair skinned
people) with the intensity often a
function of the underlying cause.

Hyperpigmentation is treated by
performing Photorejuvenation with an
Intense Pulsed Light.  Treatment amouts
can vary between 2 and 5 depending on
the patients needs.

Wrinkles are visible creases in the skin.  When the skin
changes, and ages, wrinkles are formed.  Frequent
exposure to sunshine results in premature skin wrinkling
as does cigarette smoking.
Age spots are flat brown-black spots that
usually occur in sun-exposed areas on the
body. Age spots are sometimes called brown
spots or liver spots. They are completely
unrelated to the liver or liver function. Liver
spots, et al. are changes in the skin color
associated with older skin. The increased
pigmentation of age spots is brought on by
aging, exposure to sun or to other forms of
ultraviolet lights.
Rosacea is a reddening of the skin. The early
signs of rosacea are recurrent episodes of
blushing that finally become persistent in dark-
red erythema (abnormal redness) with facial
spider veins.  Patients with this problem are
typically called “flushers and blushers”.  Rosacea
is common in the 20’s and 30’s and peaks
between the ages of 40 to 50 years.  It can be
accompanied by disfiguring swelling and redness,
particularly of the nose (rhinophyma), may
develop after many years.  Rosacea is a fairly
common disease, especially in fair-skinned
people.      Contributing factors include a genetic
disposition, gastrointestinal disturbances and
bacteria; however, rosacea is always associated
with sun exposure, so protection of the skin is
important.

Rosacea patients often experience increased
redness on the central face, less often on the
neck and on the V-shaped area of the chest.
These patients frequently blush which is caused
by numerous reasons including ultraviolet
radiation, heat, cold, exercise, chemical irritation,
strong emotions, alcoholic beverages, hot
drinks, and spices.  Eventually, the flushing and
blushing lead to permanent redness.
We treat Rosacea with our Intense Pulsed Light
Therapy.
This condition is a vascular birthmark
consisting of superficial and deep dilated
capillaries in the skin that produces
reddish to purplish discoloration of the
skin. Port-wine stains are present at birth
and most often occur on the face,
Telangiectasias are abnormally
dilated blood vessels
associated with a number of
diseases.  They may develop
anywhere within the body
but can be easily seen in the
skin.  Facial telangiectasias
(more commonly known as
spider veins) are associated
with age, sun exposure or
alcohol use.
